Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. 〰
Nancy Spero (1926-2009) was an American visual artist known for fearlessly engaging with political, social, and cultural subjects like war, state violence, and female oppression. Spero, and her artist-husband Leon Golub moved to New York during the protests against the Vietnam War. Her well-known “War Series” (1966-1970) are small gouache and ink works on paper with quick, but expressive brushwork. “That whole body of work was, in a way, my personal manifesto, made in a hurry, against the war in Vietnam,” Spero explains. “I was feeling upset as an artist who had no voice, and at the same time, I did was thinking of the horrible symbiotic relationship between the oppressor and the victim.” After the war, Spero continued to give voice to those silenced by focusing specifically on women. Spero expanded the diversity of female representation in art by using the pain and trauma of women from all eras and places around the world as subjects in her work. She depicted the experiences of historical repression, violence suffered under Latin American dictatorships, and the gender-exclusive artworld. The intense topics and images gave Spero’s courageous work a spirit of awakeness. "I’ve always sought to express a tension in form and meaning in order to achieve a veracity. I have come to the conclusion that the art world has to join us, women artists, not we join it. When women are in leadership roles and gain rewards and recognition, then perhaps 'we' (women and men) can all work together in art world actions." 〰
