Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction.

Terry Winters (b. 1949) is an American artist whose drawings, paintings and prints take inspiration from intricate systems or patterns that exist in ecology and mathematics. In his early work, Winters depicted organic shapes like plants, seeds, and “morulas,” which are clumps of reproductive cells. Often using scientific books as references, Winters depicts these biological forms in a representational manner; however, the subject being depicted is not always obvious. “The goal is to construct a picture that is autonomous and at the same time suggests multiple associations or readings,” Winters explains. “This is partly why I’m reluctant to name where all the sources are, what they are. I think there is some significance to the source, of course, but the ultimate significance is what the images conjure up in the paintings themselves and what they might mean to the viewer in terms of the multiplicity of connections that one could make in looking at them.” 〰️
The associations that we make when viewing Winters’s work reflect the deep connectivity that exists within the complex systems, patterns and network that comprise the universe. In his thirty-year career in New York, Winters has explored knot theory, cybernetics, and mental processes as sources for his images. However, not unlike the profound way in which our world is ordered, his work offers relationships and cross-connections but refuses a total understanding. “I want the pictures to have an associative power, a sense of life...I like the range of ambiguity that paintings can contain. They have a hypothetical narrative.” 〰️
This spring The Drawing Center will exhibit "Terry Winters: Facts and Fictions", an overview of Winters’s drawings from 1980 to the present including full cycles of drawings. Opens April 6, 2018.
