Artists have a variety of methods to make their mark. Every Friday we will share a photograph of an #ArtistInAction. 〰
“Most of [the work] comes from intuition, imagination, and things I’ve discovered during the making process. The work is not meant to be rational, theoretical, philosophical, or morally instructive. It’s not social or political issues, and it’s not meant as a critique of former art. Its purpose is strictly for pleasure. Its meaning is open to personal interpretation. I don’t think you need any instruction about how to appreciate it.” 〰
Ken Price (1935 -2012) was an American ceramicist whose slime-like and subliminally erotic shapes offered a fresh approach to ceramics, a medium which was often referred to as “low art.” Price’s innovative handling of the cast-off material pushed back against its relegation to the category of “craft” and helped elevate it to the status of art. Historically understood as a substance used to make utilitarian objects like tableware, one of Price’s earliest explorations into ceramics was through the humble form of a tea cup. Inspired by Mexican pottery and the natural world, Price’s tea cup series uses animal motifs and biomorphic forms that transformed the cup into a visually striking object. Typical for Price, he resists imparting too much objectivism when talking about the teacups explaining that “it was intimate, private, unimportant...It was more about how it felt to make them.” Both joyful and odd, Price’s sculptures offer the viewer a whimsical pleasure analogous to the feeling he expressed when making them. 〰
