“I like drawing...without making a drawing” - Lee Bontecou 
Best known for her sculptures in the 1960s, Lee Bontecou’s “Recent Work: Sculpture and Drawing,” an exhibit at FreedmanArt in fall 2011, was a continuation of an already expansive career. The show was comprised of hanging mobiles, drawings on paper, and a new conceptual form referred to as sandboxes, which were physical sandboxes filled with varied small objects and sculptures. These sandboxes acted as a study in composition, opening up small microcosms of imagined landscapes. 
Regarding this exhibit, Bontecou talked about being a child attuned to both drawing and sculpting with clay, an interplay that resonated in her artworks throughout her whole career. Her sculptures are often conceptualized using drawing before being transformed into a three dimensions. Her exhibit added to an already impressive oeuvre as Bontecou continues to evolve creatively, as she remarked “I am experimenting again, it’s just all an experiment now, just a big experiment.”
