Esteemed art critic and artist John Berger provides meditations and insights into the art of drawing in his work, "Bento's Sketchbook". Using 17th century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (nicknamed Bento) famed but never found sketchbook as a starting point, Berger delves into the philosophical approaches to art. By combining short vignettes and stories with the creation of art, Berger tries to connect different aspects of the human experience to discover some of the origins and interplay of human expression. 
Berger explores the function of the drawing far past a utilitarian, representational approach and instead urges the reader to explore the substance and essence of  drawing. This book leaves both artists and art lovers with a better understanding of drawing as well as a fresh approach on how to view the world at-large.
