Every Thursday, we share a favorite book about drawing and artists working in the medium. 〰
“Drawing can be considered a form of meditation. Meditation involves looking at the world without judgment and allowing what is in front of us to become understandable.” - Milton Glaser 〰
During his more than fifty-year career, Milton Glaser earn the reputation of being one of the most important graphic designers in America. His book, “Drawing is Thinking” gives us a glimpse of the amazing vocabulary of images and techniques he uses to create the iconic album covers, posters, books, and advertisements that have infiltrated much of the world. The pages reveal Glaser’s use of drawing not only as a way to represent reality, but also as a way to better understand and perceive the world.
The book delineates Glaser’s position that art has its origin in the impulse to create, and the drawings depicted on the book are meant to be experience sequentially, more like a musical progression than a catalog, so that the viewer is able to inhabit the designer’s mind. The publication begins with an introduction by writer Judith Thurman followed by a conversation between Glaser and Peter Mayer, which presents the topics of ambiguity and meditation explored in the designer’s experience of the arts. What follows is 180 pages filled with a total of 210 drawings representing a sweeping range of styles and subject matter. There is no text, just the drawings Glaser hopes will make people stop and think about what they are looking at.
