Last year, The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark published “The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen & Yayoi Kusama: A Fairy Tale of Infinity and Love Forever”, a new edition of the 179-year-old story featuring bizarre illustrations by Yayoi Kusama. The book follows “In Infinity”, the Japanese artist’s recent exhibition at the museum and her first Scandinavian retrospective. Displaying her common thematic interests in psychedelic colors, repetition, and pattern as in the rest of her oeuvre, Kusama reworks the classic story of a girl from the sea who followed her dreams and suffered a disastrous fate on land. 
The 96-page book, which is tall and perfect for storytelling time, features Kusama’s well known polka-dots to accompany Andersen’s text. Though most of the images come from the artist’s series of black-and-white marker drawings, “Love Forever” (2004–07), the publication also features some new illustrations in a similar vein. Anderson’s story is brought to life by bold, undulating lines, and entire pages are covered with waving patterns, fanciful plants suggestive of aquatic wildlife, storms in roiling waves of the ocean, and a myriad of ever-present watchful eyes.
