Throwback Thursday!

In 2015, The Drawing Center commissioned Turkish multimedia artist Inci Eviner to create a short film, "Runaway Girls", which we exhibited in the Lab. The video used repetitive, hypnotically shifting scenes to explore contemporary feminism at the crossroads of East and West, as well as the notions of the body and performance. Eviner’s goal was to bring attention to the lives of Turkish girls who had been forced to run away from their communities.
The film takes place in a warehouse under construction and presents fragmented scenes in which gender-ambiguous figures, whose faces are obscured by mysterious drawings, dance and chase one another before an endlessly rotating camera. In the artist’s words, the drawings “take the place of actors and become involved in the story. Drawings demand to be free. They want to tear themselves from the paper.” For the premiere of "Runaway Girls", we also screened some of Eviner’s previous films such as "Harem" (2009), "Parliament" (2010), "Fluxes of Girls on Europe" (2010), and "Nursing Modern Fall" (2012). #InciEviner
