We are installing Jackson Mac Low’s “Lines-Letters-Words” in our Drawing Room gallery. Join us for the Opening Reception next Thursday, January 19, 6-8pm. 
Jackson Mac Low began creating Gathas, open-ended verbal performance scores, in January 1961. His first Gathas are arrangements of letters taken from transliterations of Sanskrit mantras (chants and prayers), laid out on sheets of quadrille graph paper. The appearance of words and phrases in the Gathas is primarily dependent on chance; familiar and foreign words form when letters set alongside one another are read horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. In 1973, Mac Low began composing Gathas using words appropriated from a wider array of sources, including the names of close family and friends and modern texts, such as works by the twentieth-century Japanese writer and director Yukio Mishima. Through the Gathas, Mac Low began to relate to language in a new way, systematically organizing written words into visual configurations, a practice he would continue in his Vocabularies, Name Poems, and Nature Drawings.
