Throwback Thursday!
At the beginning of 2015, we opened "Tomi Ungerer: All in One", the first career retrospective of the award winning author and illustrator of such beloved 1960s children’s classics as "The Three Robbers" (1961) and "Moon Man" (1966). Ungerer, who was born in Alsace, France in 1931 and now lives in a remote part of Ireland, is more than a virtuoso draftsman. He made a name for himself with witty advertising campaigns for the New York Times and the Village Voice, biting satirical illustrations about the business world, and brutal pictorial responses to racism, fascism, and the Vietnam War.
The exhibition explored decades of drawings with a strong political undertone: from Ungerer’s childhood sketches depicting the Nazi invasion of Strasbourg, through his work made in New York and Canada, and his most recent satirical campaigns and illustrations for his 2013 children’s book "Fog Island". "Tomi Ungerer: All in One" occupied the entire Drawing Center and thus reintroduced this wildly creative and outspoken individual into the New York City art scene. His delicately subversive work is inscribed with mature humor and swagger that, amidst discouraging times, can take a subject as terrifying as Hitler and render him a fool.
