Throwback Thursday!

In 2013, we exhibited “Alexis Rockman: Drawings from Life of Pi”, a show featuring the watercolor drawings made in preparation for the 2012 Academy Award-winning feature film directed by Ang Lee. During pre-production, Lee sought out to Rockman’s vision as an artist with a specific commitment to hand drawing to bring a human scale to the project. The exhibition explored the relationship between visual art –specifically drawing- and commercial filmmaking.

Though most artistic contributions to the production of feature films involve photo-realistic drawings or cartoon-like illustrations, Rockman’s images are fluid, intimate, and dynamic, reflecting a darkly surreal vision of the collision between human civilization and the natural world. The film’s plot –that of an Indian boy stranded on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger- demanded sequences that mixed elements of art history and myth.The detailed sketches of animals, plants and the fantastic floating island Rockman created were displayed alongside samples of the intermediate stages of the animation process and stills of the finished product, thus providing an overview of the unique interaction between a director’s vision, an artist’s hand and eye, and the creative-technological arsenal of big budget filmmaking.
