A watercolor landscape from 1914, entitled “Hammamet with Its Mosque”, created when Klee visited the titular Tunisian city, displays the manner in which the artist used abstraction distance himself from the overpowering visual experience ignited by the real world. In “Hammamet with Its Mosque”, Klee obscures the observed contours and details of the North African landscape beneath a purely sensuous veil of color. After creating a similar landscape in the nearby town of Kairouan, the artist remarked: “Color possesses me. I don’t have to pursue it. It will possess me always, I know it.
