Opening April 15, “Drawing Dialogues: Selections from the Sol LeWitt Collection” is an exhibition featuring over 100 works by more than 60 artists from the renowned artist’s extraordinary collection. It is the first large-scale exhibition of the collection to be held in New York in over 30 years. Evening Opening April 14, 6-8pm
Alighiero Boetti was born in Italy in 1940. He was an important figure in the post-war European art and was a member of Arte Povera movement, a group of Italian artists using everyday materials. During the early 1970s he travelled to Afghanistan which had a major impact on his work. Boetti was exposed to the traditional craft of embroidery which he used to create his gridded and mosaic-like pieces in collaboration with local Afghan weavers. Many of his woven fabrics (kilims) consisted of sayings, which were often chosen in collaboration with these craftswomen. The tapestries were rooted in linguistic and cultural contexts as well as carried philosophical and mathematical implications. “Mappas” (maps), “Arazzi” (word squares), and “Tuttos” (“everything”) are the titles of some of Boetti’s works in which he embodied the notions of travel and time, contrasted order and disorder, and explored dualities. Throughout his work the conceptual artist used Persian Calligraphy alongside the Italian text. Boetti’s square shaped tapestries with their vivid colors corresponded to Sol LeWitt’s collaborative wall drawings.
