While The Drawing Center is closed through January 22 to prep our upcoming exhibitions by Louise Despont and Jennifer Bartlett, SoHo has some terrific ongoing exhibitions.
See "Medium of Desire: An International Anthology of Photography and Video" at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art
At 26 Wooster Street through March 16, 2016
(Open Tuesday-Sunday, 12-6pm | Thursday, 12-8pm | 12-4pm on New Year’s Eve. Closed on New Year’s Day.) Across cultures, nations, sexual identities and gender expressions, one constant of human existence remains: desire. Organized by Peter Weiemair, the exhibition draws together the work of fourteen contemporary artists around the globe working in photography and video. While they vary greatly in style- ranging from documentation to elaborately staged photo shoots, these works are linked by their depictions of gender, sexuality, and attraction, bridging cultural and ideological gaps in ways that can be understood regardless of the viewer’s sexuality. “The erotic wish becomes reality in the picture,” Weiemair says, “Both looking and creating the scenes become surrogates for reality. Photography is the medium of desire. The beauty of desire is evident in the work of all of these artists.” #SeeArtinSoHo leslielohmanmuseum
