Behind the scenes of "Richard Pousette-Dart: 1930s"
The Drawing Center is sharing behind-the-scenes looks at the making of our exhibitions leading up to #GivingTuesday, on December 1st. Today, we are focusing on we are focusing on "Richard Pousette-Dart: 1930s", currently on view in our Main Gallery. The exhibition is the first in-depth consideration of Richard Pousette-Dart's drawings from the 1930s. Best known as a founding member of the New York School, Pousette-Dart began drawing and painting by the age of eight. He was inspired by African, Oceanic, and Native American art during frequent trips to the Museum of Natural History. These early drawings, made between the ages of 14 and 24, explore Pousette-Dart’s concerns about sculpture and working three-dimensionally. The exhibition is curated by Brett Littman, Executive Director.
Each of The Drawing Center's exhibitions requires a little something different. What went into the Pousette-Dart exhibition? A closer look at one of the works in the exhibition reveals that it was drawn on an upside-down piece of letterhead from Lynn T. Morgan, the photography studio where Pousette-Dart worked.
