Behind the scenes of "Rashid Johnson: Anxious Men" 
The Drawing Center is sharing behind-the-scenes looks at the making of our exhibitions leading up to #GivingTuesday, on December 1st. Today, we are focusing on Rashid Johnson's site-specific installation "Anxious Men", currently on view in our Drawing Room gallery. The core of the exhibition is a brand-new series of black-soap-and-wax-on-tile portraits. These portraits, which Johnson calls his "anxious men," are set within a multi-sensory environment that includes wallpaper featuring a photograph of the artist’s father and an audio soundtrack comprised of Melvin Van Peebles’s “Love, That’s America,” from his 1970 film "Watermelon Man". The exhibition is curated by our Senior Curator Claire Gilman. 
Each of The Drawing Center's exhibitions requires a little something different. What went into Rashid Johnson's installation? Here is one elements that made the show possible:  each of the "anxious men," made of black soap and wax on tile, weighs on average 65 pounds and required specialized shipping crates.
