Throwback Thursday! #TBT Artists who explore new styles and mediums often to share characteristics—restless artistic temperament, empathy, and a passionate nomadic spirit. Like #TomiUngerer, who has moved around the world and embraced a variety of drawing styles, the Brazilian artist #AnnaMariaMaiolino (born 1942) is also a multifaceted artist. Maiolino was born in Italy and then immigrated to Venezuela. In 1960, she and her family moved to Brazil where she aligned with #LygiaClark and #HélioOiticica in the #NewFigurationMovement. Later, Maiolino devoted herself to #Minimalism and #Conceptual art in the United States.
In 2002, Anna Maria Maiolino’s exhibition “A Life Line/Vida Afora” at The Drawing Center marked her solo exhibition in the United States. The exhibition featured 100 drawings from Maiolino’s 35-year career, including works on paper that involve folds, cuts, tears, hand-sewn seams, and flowing ink. The exhibition encompassed the entire scope of the artist’s drawing practice and focused on her use of open-ended and inclusive forms that examine the personal and political connotations of space, language, and geography. #drawing #experimentation
