Coach Torpey is an alumnus of Ohio State University. After graduating he started his coaching career as an assistant at Denison College, before moving on to Goucher. He then became an assistant at Denver University where he helped build the program into a national contender. He then moved on to be an assistant and associate head Coach at Dartmouth before taking over as head coach at High Point University.

Since taking over as Head Coach in 2010, it took High Point just three seasons to make the playoffs. And in 2014, Hight point won their first conference championship. As of this recording, High Point is ranked #12 in the nation with a 5-1 in 2019.
