POPULAR: Here are some photos from our second trip to Medellin's Barrio Popular Dos. It is said to be one of the areas most affected by Covid-19 virus, and numbers are rising. 
We asked two women from the neighborhood if they personally knew of anyone affected by the virus - They both said no! I'm still unsure whether that's a good or bad thing, but it definitely made me think about the potential lack of testing availability.

Regardless of its health impact, the economic impact of the pandemic has left those who were already poor, in a state of utter desperation. Violeta, the woman who first reached out to the yosoneunsueno group for help, has become our liaison between 30 families in the barrio. I guess you could say that she is a hero or better yet - an angel in her community. "Many people are in a really bad situation without food, but they don't want to hang the red flags in their windows because people in the neighborhood like to gossip", tells Violeta. The red flags are intended to indicate that the households have no food, money,...,....,noting. 
Luckily, Violeta is quite active in the Popular Dos barrio. She was able to lead us directly to some of the families who didn't have flags hung, but definitely should have. 
Yesterday (Sunday), we distributed essential food and household items to 30+ families. We were also approached by several individuals asking if they could receive help the "next time". So we took their ID numbers and promised to help them whenever that next time comes. 
We will continue to photograph these "barrios" over the coming weeks to raise awareness of the reality that many people are currently facing in Medellin. These may not be the type of images that main stream media shows, but they are very crude portraits of the present situation.
