I’m turning off the comments on this post. It’s time to speak to our leaders and not just argue in the comments. I’ll just give a few thoughts I included in my email.

“As a youth, exploring libraries taught me that the world view that I had been given was like peering in through a keyhole. That my lens was startlingly limited. The library was a window into other ways of thought. That knowledge gave me empathy. A thirst to know more. More about my history, the cultures & beliefs of others. It helped me towards a realization that there was not one right way to be or think. That communities are beautiful in their diversity. I developed a passion for that inclusion.

It was in libraries that I also found myself. The strong woman I would become, mirrored in stories of others who questioned the status quo. It gave me permission to change and grow. A understanding I was good and valid - even though I was different from what I saw around me.

There are books I find highly offensive in the library. Books that teach antiquated ideas about women for example.

I teach my children why we don’t read those books. We choose not to check them out.

But I would NEVER infringe on others families right to choose that book for themselves. It is wrong to remove that freedom of choice.

Dissolving something so valuable to our community out of fear of something different or uncomfortable is not appropriate. BOOKS are often uncomfortable. That’s how we grow.

As a leader in this community, I ask our government leadership to keep the Meridian Library District intact to continue their crucial work in our community.”
