HAWGSMOKE 2022 with the 124fighterwing and the idahonationalguard was seriously one of the coolest things I’ve ever had the honor to witness.

Hawgsmoke is a global missile, bombing, and tactical gunnery competition designed specifically for the A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthog” fighter jet. The event allows pilots and maintenance crews to simulate the pressures of combat and refine their skills while competing against units from around the globe.

I’m embarrassed to say that before we started doing research for theboisebubble episode on The Idaho Nation Guard, I was completely oblivious to how much they do for the community, The Idaho Air National Guard is one of the state’s top employers. Guardsmen live in Idaho and work civilian jobs while serving in the IDANG. They are students, coworkers, family, friends, neighbors, and contributors to the local economy. In addition to supporting a federal mission, Guardsmen have a state mission to support Idaho during times of emergency or crisis. Gowen Field is home to a Joint Operations Center that conducts exercises in conjunction with the Emergency Operations Center to support domestic operations during fires, natural disasters, and mass medical emergencies, including support of local health care providers during the pandemic. The IDANG has also been a long-standing partner with the U.S. Forest Service, assisting with wildland fires. The 124th Air Support Operations Squadron (ASOS) in the IDANG also has a mission readiness package to assist with search and rescue.
