In 2021, Sadiq Khan launched his bid for re-election with a pledge to build 40,000 council homes by the end of the decade, an average of approximately 7,300 a year.

But, with around 325,000 households on London local authority waiting lists, that pledge is, quite frankly an insult, lacking in ambition and conscience, to every single citizen of our nation’s once great capital.

As the most popular independent candidate in the upcoming London Mayor election, I believe that the mayor’s position is untenable.

He boasts about building 7,300 local authority homes a year and yet, by his own figures, this means it would take 44 years to clear the backlog in London, and even that relies on demand for such housing remaining stable.

He has had eight years in which to revamp the capital’s housing provision and yet seems content to gaslight voters with a housing policy which, at its heart, could see Londoners die while they wait for a home.

In the upcoming Mayor of London ballot, I believe that voters want a real choice. An alternative candidate who has ambitious plans to address London’s lack of affordable housing. By pledging to build 50,000 modular homes by the end of the year, on Transport for London land that has been identified across the capital.

The lack of social housing is a pressing issue across London. For example, in Wandsworth the council warns that, unless you are placed in one of the top two priority queues for a property, it is “very unlikely to be in a position to offer you a property”.

And in Hammersmith and Fulham, the council says the situation has gotten worse in recent years while Khan has been Mayor.

That’s why London desperately needs to vote for a change on May 2nd: the Khan status quo is well past its sell-by date.
