Maundy Thursday is a service with three basic themes:⁣ ⁣
1. In this service we reflect on the final Passover that Jesus shared with his disciples. Passover was (and still is) celebrated each year by the Jewish community to remember the Exodus (exit) of Israel from Egypt, the land of slavery and death. As part of that meal, a lamb was roasted and its blood sprinkled on the front doorpost of the house where the meal was celebrated. By sprinkling the blood of the lamb on the doorpost, those inside would be rescued from the death the tenth plague would bring to all Egyptian firstborns.⁣

2. In this particular Passover, Jesus used the bread and wine to say that he is now the Passover lamb, whose body will be broken and blood will be shed to rescue humanity from the slavery of sin and death. In this way he foreshadowed his own death on the cross. Jesus also commanded his followers to celebrate this Passover meal “in remembrance of him” until he returns. That’s why we celebrate communion on Maundy Thursday as well as at many of our services each week.⁣
⁣
3. In the Maundy Thursday service we also reflect on Jesus’ command to “love one another even as I have loved you” (John 13:34). In fact, the word “Maundy” is derived from an old French word (mandé), which comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “command.” During this service some churches wash each other’s feet, just as Jesus washed his disciple’s feet.⁣
