“Everybody hurts.” How I wish that wasn’t true.⁣
⁣
Before September 14, 2014 I had a very full, passion-filled life. I was a pianist/singer and had been on staff at churches and Drake University. I was the vocal teacher at DC-G High School.⁣
⁣
On a September day, I was driving back to school for an evening rehearsal when a truck ran a stop sign at over 70 mph and totaled my car. Amongst other injuries, I suffered a severe TBI and was in a months-long coma.⁣
⁣
I am now doing much better but still suffer from migraines. Sometimes I have warning and can take measures. Sometimes...no such luck.⁣
⁣
Occasionally they’re so severe I just lay down wherever I am. My husband sees this, and he asks a well-rehearsed series of questions: “Did you take something? Do you need a drink?” Then he leads me to the bed, helps me to lie down and gently covers me with a blanket.⁣
⁣
During these headaches I have a lot of time to think and listen to God. Overall, I have to admit, my continuing pain has stripped away most of the things that I would tend to get burdened down with otherwise: when they hit, suddenly there is no talking, no errands. Nothing exists except the pain. When I can start thinking again, I always reach out for God/Jesus/the Holy Spirit. Then I ask them, (sometimes less politely than others) to “please get in here with me and help me bear it.” And they always have.⁣
⁣
Pain, although it is very difficult to accept, seems to be the only thing that truly causes us to strip away everything we once thought of as important. And I must say, I resent that greatly still. I have, however, found a strange, confounding joy in the midst of my pain. Because I know this is not how it ends for us. And I think of how much more Jesus went through on the cross. Nothing less would “give” me this time to meditate on that for hours. And God is good.⁣
