When I got asked to write for Pieces From Hope, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t super excited about it. I’ve been putting it off since August. You see, the request came to me during a season of my life that I have never found myself in before. I have had times in my life where I have doubted that God was real. That’s not what this was. For the first time, I didn’t feel God. I knew he was real, but it seemed as if he was on the other side of a football field. I almost felt as if he were dangling me over a cliff. It's a pretty unsettling feeling when your job is to stand on a stage and lead a congregation into the throne room of a God you’re not feeling is there.⁣
⁣
At our November all-staff meeting in West Des Moines, the theme was “Rest”. In my mind, I had way too much work to do and didn't have time to spend an hour in prayerful rest. To say I was not excited is an understatement. I sat for the next 45 minutes or so ‘doing’ the prayer exercises provided and singing along.⁣
⁣
But then.⁣
⁣
But then Perry started singing a song I had never heard before. Way Maker. I felt as if they had chosen that song specifically for me.⁣
⁣
“Even when I don’t see it, you’re working. Even when I don’t feel it, you’re working. You never stop, you never stop working.”⁣
Talk about a heart check. Even when it feels like God is a football field away, He is still near. Even when things feel like they are crashing down around us, God is still with us. Jesus is our light in the darkness and if we can lean into that truth, things will get better. My feelings of God being far away aren’t completely gone, but I’m relearning what it means to trust Him. I'm relearning what it means to let God be in control of my life.⁣
