“She’s so cute” … “The most joy-filled people” … I hear phrases like this all the time. Heck, I have said it. While I know we all mean well, we need to change the way we see, hear and listen to those around us, especially those who act, think and look different. I have been Miranda’s nanny (I prefer “sis” and “shouter of worth”) for eight years now. She’s my bestie and sister forever and ever. Do I think she’s cute? Duh. She makes sure to tell me I’m cute! But if there is something Mir has taught be these eight years of bein’ her sis is that there is a heck of a lot more to her than just being cute.⁣

1 Corinthians 12:12 says, “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.” and continues in 1 Corinthians 12:22-25 to say, “On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.”⁣

Mir and I study the Bible together. Mir answers the same questions I do in my study journal. She understands the gospel. She knows Jesus. Not because of anything I have said, but how the Lord has made himself known to her. Miranda is a necessary piece of God’s body. She is seen as honorable and is expected to be taken care of with special care. Church, my encouragement is for you to take SPECIAL CARE of those around you. Meaning, befriending, having genuine interaction, stepping into what seems uncomfy at first and seeing the ability and worth within, seeing one as human. Miranda is not just cute. Those who have different abilities are not always the most joyful, and that is OK. They are necessary. Our Father calls us to have ears that hear and eyes that see the worth in those around us.⁣
