The question has been asked a lot over the past year: what would the Olympic team have looked like in 2020? The games happen every four years and only war or global catastrophe has altered that. Every four years provides only a snapshot of the talent that flashes in and out of a sport where careers are more often marked by a single transcendent performance than by superb consistency. Athing Mu was already a phenom in 2020, having broken the US indoor 600m record at 17 in 2019, but the 800m rounds are notoriously grueling and unpredictable. A phenom, regardless of talent can get swallowed up redlining and spinning from the break-neck tactical maneuvering of seasoned vets who make their bones keeping a level head as chaos swirls around them inside 2 minutes.
 
8 women ran under 2 minutes in a field overly represented by experienced racers- those who know how to dodge and weave. When Chanelle Price went to the front and clocked a 57.7 first lap, you had to look at the clock to know it because the field was bunched and chomping as if it were a more reasonable pace. The pack stayed bunched, rolling through position changes onto the final stretch before Raevyn Rogers broke it open and found daylight into the line, running an exceptional 1:57.66.
 
The wrinkle here is that shortly after a lap to go, the smooth-striding phenom, Athing Mu slid effortlessly into the lead and ran unchallenged until the final turn when she kicked from the front, dropping gears from the future. She didn’t have to concern herself with the rules of the game. She glided in a parallel universe, and the most talented US Trials field ever assembled could only frantically chase the closing door from 2020.
