Storming down the straight, present and future clashed momentarily as the reigning national champion in the 5000m fought off a gutsy challenge from a fresh-faced young buck still finding his legs in the distance. 

Lopez Lomong made his bones originally in the metric mile, winning the National title in college and then making an Olympic team in the event. His career experienced a resurgence over the pat few years with his move to the longer distances. 

Similarly, a young David Ribich initially found success as a Western Oregon Wolf setting the DII national record in the 1500m. In just his second 5000m, he sparred with greatness and taunted the competition with a glimpse of the future.
