TALES FROM TRACKLANDIA
(Part 4/4) ——————————————————————
After the 10k at PTF, Cam Marantz stayed in Portland and haunted the local chocolate and coffee shops. Coping with the belief that he was robbed of a spot at the Trials by a side stitch, he could have packed his bags, folded up his couch and gone home. Instead, he entered the 5,000m at the Stumptown Twilight. The pace was going to be hot, with Galen Rupp, Eric Jenkins, Woody Kincaid and Justin Knight in the field. He’d put himself in it and see what he could get. Probably sub 14. Maybe sub 13:50. Wrestling with the idea of averaging 65 second laps, optimism and skepticism existed simultaneously in Cam’s mind: “I can do it.” “Am I being delusional?” The rain cleared just in time for the gun. The first lap fell, 66.4, the second lap, 65.4, 65.6, 65.8, 65.8, 65.7, 65.3. The pace felt hot but he could hang, and he wasn’t letting the front go. With 600 to go, the leaders separated and played their hands for the win. Cam threw down a 61 second lap followed by a 31 second final 200m to cross the line in 8th place, the clock showing 13:34.97. 31 seconds cut from his 5k. The gamble paid off in Tracklandia.
