TALES FROM TRACKLANDIA
————————————————————————
“I think my mind stopped with the clock”.
Coming into the spring of 2015, Fiona Benson had an 800 PB of 2:08.54. The lengthy Canadienne from upper British Columbia entered the season not wanting to leave any potential untapped. In her first outing, a local race in Victoria, she sliced nearly 7 seconds to notch 2:01.58. She then ran 2:01.48 at Harry Jerome and 2:01.02 at the Victoria Intl. Track Classic. Cracking 2:01 was necessary to represent Canada at the World Championships. She ventured south to Portland in search of the drop. In a hotly contested final heat of the two-lap race, Benson freed herself from the pack and came charging down the stretch. Behind her, a world class field included a hand full of Olympians, now Canadian national record holder, Melissa Bishop and American record holder, Shannon Rowbury. When the dust settled, the clock read 1:59.94- a new PTF record and World Qualifying mark. When asked what she thought of the performance, she replied: “I think my mind stopped with the clock.”
