John F. Lansing, the chief executive officer and director of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, urged the Class of 2019 to be guardians of the truth in an age of fake news and social media.

Lansing addressed graduates of the School of Business, the School of Communications and the School of Education, at the graduate Commencement ceremony, held this morning in our People’s United Center. “Sometimes, the truth must be managed carefully to avoid unnecessarily harming certain stakeholders. But it is the foundation our nation rests upon: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident,’” Lansing said, saying he was speaking for himself and not the U.S. Agency for Global Media or the U.S. government.
