Ian McCracken is willing to do whatever it takes to help the children and families of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. With hundreds of philanthropic and charitable initiatives vying for our students’ attention each year, the Quinnipiac senior struggled to find a creative way to bring attention to the beneficiary of our annual six-hour dance marathon known as ‪#QTHON‬. “I want it to become part of the culture,” he said. After much thought, he launched fundraising and awareness campaign utilizing social media and an online video series where he would complete more ambitious tasks as he raised more money. Utilizing the skills he learned in the classroom, the marketing major and president of the Quinnipiac chapter of Delta Tau Delta got to work toward his $2,000 goal. He quickly passed his $500 goal, and promise of baking a cookie for each of the first 100 participants of QTHON, and then the $950 goal, and promise to let kids paint his face at QTHON. When he reached the $1,300 mark, he knew he’d have to wax and shave his legs. At the $1,500 mark, he pierced his ears. One hundred dollars later, he knew he’d be growing and then shaving “FTK” (or “For the Kids”) on the side of a mohawk-style haircut. As we approach the 2 p.m. start of QTHON, he vows to get a “FTK” tattoo on his arm if he reaches his $2,000 goal. “This takes a lot of time and dedication,” he said, “but if you truly care about a cause, you will do whatever it takes to find success.” Next time you see Ian, be sure to ask to see his “For the Kids” tattoo. We are pretty sure he’ll surpass his goal. Ian is one of our nearly 10,000 students who are working diligently to create a more vibrant community by volunteering and giving back.
