The British artist, filmmaker and activist, Derek Jarman - photographed here by kcmanc, circa 1986.⁠
Employing both mainstream and experimental narrative and form, his cinema referenced a diverse swathe of cultural and political history, from Ancient Rome to punk, the Renaissance to Thatcherism. ⁠
Jarman's 1986 work, War Requiem - featuring Laurence Olivier in his last screen performance - was an adaptation of composer Benjamin Britten's piece of the same name, while he also directed music videos for the likes of The Smiths and the Pet Shop Boys.⁠
A gay rights activist, he was a high-profile campaigner against Section 28 - the British legislation banning the "promotion" of homosexuality in education - and raised  awareness of AIDS.⁠
Diagnosed HIV positive in 1986, AIDS-related complications left him partially blind towards the end of his life, only able to see in shades of blue. His final feature film reflects this, with 'Blue' (1993) consisting of a saturated blue screen and an audio narration of his life and thoughts. It is held in several museum collections.⁠
In 2020, the British Art Fund launched a successful appeal to buy Jarman's Dungeness home and garden, Prospect Cottage, for the nation.⁠
February is LGBT+ History Month in the UK, which this year explores the theme of Politics in Art: 'The Arc is Long'.⁠
