Following the death of Steve Schapiro, Getty Images Archive Director bob_ahern, who worked with the American photojournalist, pays tribute.⁠

⁠"Very few photographers shoot so well and across so many genres but Steve had a remarkable talent and capacity to do it all. ‘Iconic’ may be a much used word, but Steve’s work had so many moments that would become exactly that - his contributions to photography and the historical record are just extraordinary. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠

After an introduction to the writer James Baldwin, Schapiro would go on to document the American struggle for Civil Rights, and his photos bring us an intimacy and stillness that connect us so profoundly to their subjects. Steve made photos that inform, but he also made us feel – a byproduct not only of his remarkable talent but of his own activism and point of view. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠

As we increasingly look to decode our pasts to understand the present, Steve’s photography will remain as relevant and as poignant as the day it was shot."⁠ ⁠ ⁠
