Photographed in May 1942, enlisted men of the Naval Air Station at Kaneohe, Hawaii, place leis on the graves of their comrades killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor.⁠
The military strike by Imperial Japan on US territory had taken place on 7 December 1941. Cited by then President  Franklin D. Roosevelt as "a date which will live in infamy", the attack had come without an official declaration of war.⁠
A neutral country since the outbreak of conflict in 1939, the US entered into WWII the following day.⁠
