1. Guitarist Mary Kaye was born Malia Ka'aihue in Detroit, 1924, & claimed her ancestry back to the 19th century Hawaiian sovereign, Queen Liliʻuokalani. Kaye spearheaded the Las Vegas Lounge scene of the 1950s, & has a Fender Stratocaster model named in her honor I Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images⁠⁠

2. Nam June Paik is considered one of the founders of video art. Highly influential, the Korean American explored the possibilities of telecommunications in his work & first coined the term, “electronic super highway”. 3. Chinese American actress Anna May Wong was one of the few performers to crossover from silent film to “talkies”, finding success in both Hollywood & European cinema. A style icon & globally-recognized star, nevertheless MGM refused to give  Wong the role of Chinese character O-Lan in the 1937 film, ‘The Good Earth’, instead casting a white European actress in the role. Disillusioned, Wong refused a consolation offer to play the part of “Lotus the seductress”, accepting more positive portrayals of Chinese-American life in a series of smaller-budget films I Sasha/Hulton Archive/Getty Images⁠⁠

4. Designer of the original World Trade Center, Japanese American architect Minoru Yamasaki, pictured in 1958 with the model of the Education Building he designed for Wayne State University.
