With Black History Month being celebrated in the U.S & Canada, gettyarchive curator melanie__llewellyn is highlighting key Black photographers represented across our collections.⁠ ⁠⁠

Like many of the modern masters, anthony_barboza_photographer began his career in commercial photography, understanding how concept and medium might meet most effectively. With a broad, always inventive aesthetic that encompasses portraiture, documentary and art photography, his career has spanned six decades.⁠⁠
Moving to New York in 1963 and not yet twenty, Barboza studied under the esteemed jazz and fashion photographer Hugh Bell. He would later follow his mentor onto the pages of Esquire and Ebony in an extensive editorial career that saw bylines in The New Yorker, Forbes, Vogue and many more. Barboza photographed artists from across the creative arts, intellectuals, and models in dynamic stance that animated but never overwhelmed the fashion.⁠⁠
It was another older Black photographer, Adger Cowans, who would introduce him to what was then known as the Kamoinge Workshop. The non-profit collective of Black photographers was founded in 1963 under the directorship of Roy DeCarava, ostensibly to document the multiplicities of Black lived experience. Socially concerned and adopting a rigorous critical approach, the group continues today as Kamoinge Inc., with Barboza now president.⁠⁠
Examining historical and contemporary narratives of the African Diaspora in American society and culture, Barboza’s work is held in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian and New York’s Museum of Modern Art.⁠ Please see our first comment for captions and follow our bio link for more.⁠⁠
