Regular patrols and ongoing intelligence gathering are necessary to combat the constant incursions by illegal fisherman as well as Mai Mai militia groups on the lake, once the home of the largest hippo population in the world.

2. Andre Bauma, head caretaker of the orphan mountain gorillas inside the Senkwekwe Centre, the only orphanage for mountain gorillas in the world in Rumangabo, DR Congo. He is seen with Matabishi, an enormous blackback has grown up in the orphanage.

3. A quick reaction force ranger watches a storm come in at Ruti Forward Operating Base in Virunga, DR Congo.

4. A herd of over 550 elephants that recently crossed over from Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda to Virunga National Park in the DR Congo.
