Jubilation fills the frame as residents of Newark, New Jersey, celebrate the news of Imperial Japan's surrender in August 1945, effectively ending WWII.⁠
The announcement had been made in Japan by Emperor Hirohito at noon on 15 August, one of the first occasions that the Emperor had addressed his nation at large, in a broadcast delivered in Classical Japanese. The anniversary is now commemorated in Japan as "the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace".⁠
A formal surrender followed on 2 September in Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri, with both dates observed as V-J Day in different nations around the world.⁠
