While 2020 marks 25 years of Getty Images, we represent historic collections from around the world with their own story to tell. Here, gettyarchive takes a closer look at life – a publishing phenomenon that defined the American lens for decades.⠀
⠀
“To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events; to watch the faces of the poor & the gestures of the proud; to see strange things — machines, armies, multitudes, shadows in the jungle & on the moon; to see man’s work — his paintings, towers & discoveries; to see things thousands of miles away, things hidden behind walls & within rooms, things dangerous to come to…to see & take pleasure in seeing; to see & be amazed; to see & be instructed...”⠀
⠀
The founder of LIFE, Henry Luce outlines his vision for the new weekly in 1936, the year of its launch. Reviving a light entertainment title first printed in 1883, it was to join Time & Fortune in the media magnate's impressive portfolio. The first magazine of its kind in the US, the format was influenced by the illustrated press of Europe & its advance of the photo-essay as a universal form of reportage for the modern age.⠀
⠀
From its boldly graphic first cover of the Fort Peck Dam photographed by Margaret Bourke-White, the magazine examined the endeavour of humankind - and its failings - through incisive visuals. Covering conflict, science, social realities, fashion & culture both high and low, LIFE’s photographers fixed the events of the mid-twentieth century into collective memory. ⠀

Scroll through for key images from: Larry Burrows, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Lisa Larsen, Paul Schutzer, Gjon Mili, Nina Leen, Gordon Parks, John Loengard, W. Eugene Smith, and that first cover image by Bourke-White.⠀
⠀
Since partnering with the LIFE Picture Collection in 2003, over one million images have been published online at gettyimages.com, with 75,000 pictures released this year alone. Follow our bio link to explore.⠀
