Bringing an end to the Vietnam War and leading to the formal reunification of the country, Saigon was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City, after the late North Vietnamese President. ⁠
Some 7,000 US and "at-risk" Vietnamese citizens had been evacuated from the city in the preceding days, during Operation Frequent Wind.⁠
