Officials called a week-long state of emergency in the Australian state of New South Wales on Thursday where nearly 10 million acres have been burned and at least 1,200 homes destroyed so far this season. Tens of thousands of firefighters have worked for weeks to control the blazes, as thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes — often taking refuge on beaches and in boats as the fires raged around them. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who has been criticized for his climate change policies, was confronted by angry residents in a town ravaged by the fires on Thursday, following outrage last month when he took a vacation to Hawaii amid the crisis. ⁠⠀
