Protests in Chile have reached its 50th day, triggered by demonstrations against subway fare increase which turned into civil unrest and awakened a fight against social inequality. Our photographers Marcelo Hernández and Claudio Santana share their experience covering the events. ⁠ “It’s something new because it’s taking place in your own home, the personal cost is high, we are all in the same situation, which makes it more intense”, says Claudio. ⁠
“As a photographer it is difficult, but it’s also a commitment to society and a great responsibility to tell the truth. To be able to tell the story first-hand is a great challenge”, Marcelo adds.⁠
“We are privileged witnesses, we have the advantage and duty to show what is going on in the streets: human rights abuses, violence, but also citizens’ hope for a better outcome.
