## Caption

Angelina Jolie may have taken cues from the cartoon Maleficent of Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty', but the 1959 film modelled its animated Mistress of Evil on a live action performance.⁠
Captured here by LIFE photographer Allan Grant, Jane Fowler shared the role with actress Eleanor Audley, who provided the voice of the character in the final film. ⁠
Their movements and expressions were replicated by the Disney artists to create an enduring villainess who, while ⁠fantastical, was creepily lifelike.⁠
As LIFE put it back in 1958, "No witch ever swished her black cape with a witchier sneer."⁠
