Today, US astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir embarked on the first all-female spacewalk - 56 years after Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.⁠
The Soviet cosmonaut is pictured here shortly before the Vostok 6 flight commenced, on 16 June 1963.⁠
Orbiting the Earth 48 times, the engineer spent almost three days in space and remains the only woman to have accomplished a solo mission.⁠
