It’s 130 years since the Tricolour was hoisted from its wrought-iron lattices and a 25-cannon salute inaugurated the Eiffel Tower.
Then a symbol of French ingenuity and success, it was designed and constructed by Gustave Eiffel as a monumental entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair.
The engineer held a private apartment at the summit; while few guests were permitted, Eiffel did host Thomas Edison not long after the tower opened.
While champagne flowed, the American demonstrated his own emblematic invention - the phonograph.
Originally due to be dismantled in 1909, the enduring popularity of the tower ensured it became a permanent fixture of the Parisian skyline.
Since then, as a defiant backdrop to the highs and lows of the French capital, it has become a peerless national icon.
Despite being one of the most prolifically pictured structures in the world, it continues to enchant photographers. Swipe through our gallery for a look at the tower as it has been reimagined by the camera, including an image of its early illuminations.
