Tuning in to the parallel attitudes of British punk and US hip hop, photographer Janette Beckman’s rolled back, documentary aesthetic matched and helped shape the two movements. 
British-born, Beckman started out in London shooting for countercultural titles like The Face, before moving to New York in the early 1980s.
Intuitive and warmed through with a fan’s affection, Beckman’s images can be scuzzy or lean; whether making brilliant use of exteriors or focusing on fashion and gesture in the studio, she captures a constant of the subject along with a transience of mood.
