Challenged to produce a story of magazine quality using only a cheap Box Brownie camera, Picture Post’s Bert Hardy had one quick trip to Blackpool beach in which to prove himself – and he did. Roaming the Golden Mile, he invited two women to sit for him and waited for the right moment to follow. The alignment of the breaking waves and the rails, the small figures flecked on the beach and that infamous gust of wind make for a brilliant image. Representing something of the mood in 1951’s post-war Britain, it remains a hugely popular image today. Celebrated as the famous ‘girl in the spotty dress’, Pat Stewart died in May of this year. 📷Bert Hardy | 1951 | #GettyImagesArchive #ThrowbackThursday
