“For me, volcanoes have always had a special attraction. When I saw a puff of smoke from the peak of Sinabung, I assumed that the mountain would erupt soon. I asked the locals but they said this wasn't a definite sign. So I decided to approach the mountain in the hope I would get a more interesting view and in the middle of my journey, Sinabung suddenly erupted. I tried to find a safe location at a radius of about 4 km from the top of mount Sinabung to get a picture. While I was searching, I was faced with panicked car drivers who had not dealt with an eruption before so I tried my best to calm him down.
Several time during my two months covering mount Sinabung, I woke up in the morning with my nose bleeding, it must have been caused by volcanic material I had inhaled. During this time, I not only saw but also felt the sorrow of citizens who had lost their home, land, and more. Honestly, I have to admit I felt the same grief. Especially when we lost two journalist friends who were among victims swept under the pyroclastic flows. Until now the volcano still erupts and don't know when it will stop.” - uletifan #GettyImagesNews | January 8, 2014 | Karo District, North Sumatra, Indonesia #photographertakeover [1 of 3]
