Getty Images news photographer Mario Tama joined NASA's Operation IceBridge team to capture stunning aerial photos during research flights over West Antarctica. Today he is taking over gettyimages for a behind the lens look at his work.

"I approached the NASA #IceBridge team a year ago about joining one of their science flights, either over Antarctica, or Greenland. It worked out that #Antarctica was more feasible due to the roomy size of the DC-8 research aircraft that flies Icebridge missions out of southern Chile. On my first day, I was given safety and egress training which included instructions on where to access the emergency cold weather gear and how to radio back to civilization, if necessary. The plane was loaded with instruments and a team which included NASA pilots and flight crew, scientists and mission engineers.
